Gabriel Reyes “Gabe” Rodriguez, 60, Emporia, Kansas, passed away Monday, January 11, 2016 at AMG Specialty Hospital, Wichita, Kansas.
Gabriel Rodriguez was born in Emporia on January 6, 1956, the son of Lorenzo and Sofia (Torres) Rodriguez. He married Janice K. (Wallace) Tabares on May 20, 1989 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia.
Surviving family members include his wife, Janice, Emporia; daughters, Kami Tabares, Lawrence, Kansas, and Lindsi and Holly Tabares, both of Emporia; brothers, John Rodriguez, Sr, and Raymond Rodriguez, both of Emporia, and Manuel Rodriguez, Belton, Missouri; a sister, Monica Rodriguez, Wichita; and nine grandchildren, Damian and Daniel Herrera, Donovan Tabares, Audreanna and Xamara McCallister, Jermaine and Metajia Taj, and Talihah and R.J. Colbert.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Esperanza Rodriguez, and brothers, Andrew Rodriguez and Victor Rodriguez, Sr.
Gabe was an employee of the City of Emporia recycling center the past four years, and before that had been a concrete finisher.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia. He was active in Mexican-American Fast Pitch Softball and in 2010 was inducted into the Mexican-American Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in Newton. Gabe supported Emporia Kids Wrestling and the Emporia High School Wrestling programs and was an Emporia High School Booster Club member. Gabe was also a member of the Las Casitas Association. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing pool.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia on Friday, January 15, 2016 at 10:00 A.M., with Father Brandon Farrar, Celebrant. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Emporia.
The Rosary will be recited at the church Thursday evening at 6:00 P.M. with the family receiving friends until 8:00 P.M.
