Gary L. Gurley, Sr., 71, of Emporia, Kansas, died Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Flint Hills Care Center, Emporia.
Gary was born on August 27, 1943 in Emporia, the son of Clyde and Lois Marie Matthews Gurley. He married Norma Cole and later divorced. Gary married Sue Andrews on July 16, 1990 in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. She survives.
Other survivors include: sons, Gary Gurley, Jr., and wife, Karen of Emporia, James Gurley and wife, Lynette of Emporia, and Mark Ledford and wife, Heather on Mayetta, Kansas; daughters, Mandy Erkel and husband, Marcus of Emporia, Megan Loomis and husband, Shannon of Kansas City, Kansas, and Morgan Gurley of Emporia; stepsons, Joe Krueger, Dave Krueger, Bobby Krueger, and Roy Krueger; stepdaughters, Debra Gates, and Cheryl Douglas; grandchildren, Aaron and Alex Gurley, Paige Rankin, Connor and Logan Gurley, Landon, Lillie and Harley Ledford, Chesney and Berkley Erkel, Halle and Hannah Loomis, and Maddex Gurley; great-grandchildren, Emma Gurley, Tessa Gurley, and Brooklyn and Aaliyah Rankin; and a brother, George Gurley of Winfield.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Kenny Cowser.
Gary served in the United States Navy, and later worked for Santa Fe Railroad for 25 years as a brakeman and switchman. Gary also owned several businesses in Emporia.
Cremation is planned, with a private memorial service at a later date. Memorials to the G.L. Gurley Youth Golf Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
