Gary W. Mounkes, 70, of rural Reading, Kansas, died on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.
Gary was born on July 24, 1942 in Emporia, the son of Elvern and Milly A. Moore Mounkes. He married Sarah Gilligan on July 28, 1962 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hartford, Kansas.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, and a great-nephew, Charles Mounkes of Kansas City, Kansas.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Charley B. Henson; his aunt and uncle who raised him, Marie and Everett Mounkes; two brothers, Robert and Neil Mounkes; and a nephew, William (Bill) Mounkes.
Gary graduated from Lawrence High School, and attended Wichita State University prior to joining the Army in 1961. He served as a military policeman. Following service, he returned to the rural environment that he loved. His passion was the beauty he saw in God’s creation, the land, nature, working with cattle, early morning sunrises, and good neighbors. He took a second job at Dolly Madison Bakery in Emporia, leading to a dual career. He was soon hired by the Bakery, Confectionary and Tobacco Workers International Labor Union. He traveled extensively, serving as Int’l representative, Pension Trustee, and Int’l Vice President, retiring in 1996, returning again to ranching.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Hartford. Cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, April 1, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hartford. Interment will be at St. Mary’s of the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Hartford. The Rosary will be recited at 6:30 P.M. Sunday evening, March 31, 2013 at Robert-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, with a visitation following.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s church building fund or to a scholarship for a Hartford High School graduating senior, and sent in care of the funeral home.
