George Henry Mechtley

George Henry Mechtley passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012 in Emporia, Kansas. He was 91.

George was born in El Dorado, Kansas, September 22, 1920, to Clair Mechtley and Irene Taylor Mechtley. He married Erma Gene Grimmett on July 10, 1942 in Emporia.

He is survived by a brother, Theodore Mechtley, of Emporia; three daughters, Georgene Verlin of Marshfield, Missouri, and Janice King and Donna Plummer of Springfield, Missouri; two sons, Alan Mechtley of Overland Park, Kansas, and Larry Mechtley of Emporia. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; half-brother, James Moore; and brothers, William and Robert Mechtley.

He was drafted in July of 1942, and served until 1945 in the 261st Infantry of the third army of the European Theater of World War II. He was a radio operator with the rank of tech sergeant.

George was a mason contractor in the Emporia area. He was a member of the Bricklayer's Union Local #15 and International Union of Bricklayers and Craftsmen for 65 years.

He was a lifetime member of the Emporia VFW Post 1980, and the American Legion Post 5, serving on the VFW color guard for 35 years.

George was most proud of his family, his military service, and his craft.

The funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 31, 2012 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. Burial will be at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 7 to 8pm Thursday, August 30, 2012 at the funeral home.
