Glen E. Gilpin (88) of Emporia, Kansas, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.

Glen Edwin Gilpin, the son of Claude and Helen McGrew Gilpin, was born February 11, 1923 in Centerville, Kansas. He married Norma Mendenhall in Emporia on June 17, 1951. She survives of the home.

Other surviving members of the family include: a son, Glen E. Gilpin II and wife Nancy of Emporia; a daughter, Cynthia Hermes of Topeka; grandchildren, Lauren and Cassie Hermes of Topeka, Aniata and Bob Strohm of Kansas City, Missouri, and Megan Gilpin of New York, New York; and one great-granddaughter, Madeline Rose Strohm of Kansas City, Missouri.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Helen Gilpin and a brother, Howard.

He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Kansas, and started a general contracting business in Emporia, retiring in 1988. During World War II, he served in the Navy, and was also a merchant marine. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, past president and member of Kansas Contractors, Kansas Asphalt Paving Association, Sigma Chi Fraternity, Emporia Chamber of Commerce, Emporia Enterprises, and the “Rusty Zippers” coffee club.

The memorial service will be held 10:30 A.M. on Friday, May 27, 2011 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with Fr. Kelley Lackey, rector, of the church officiating. Interment will be in the St. Andrew’s Churchyard, behind the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either the Emporia Red Cross for disaster relief or to the Emporia Salvation Army for hungry children.
