Gloria Catherine (Ritterhoff) Stewart, of Emporia, Kan., was born in Kansas City, Mo., on February 22, 1925, to Herbert Louis and Faye June (Gilbert) Ritterhoff. Gloria passed away October 4, 2017 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka Kan., with her family by her side. She was 92.
Memorial services are planned at 3:00 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2017, at St Andrew's Episcopal Church, 9th and Commercial, Emporia, Kan. The family will receive friends in the church Parish Hall beginning at 2:00 p.m.
A self-taught portrait artist, Gloria has been recognized in numerous art shows and exhibits. Her career began after entering and winning a city wide drawing competition at the age of sixteen in Kansas City, Mo. Her interest in the arts remained present in home, family and church. Known for her organizational and design talents, Gloria helped coordinate many English Teas at St Andrew's church. She was an accomplished pianist who played by ear and filled her home with music.
Gloria met her husband Clifford E. Stewart after his return from World War II. They married on October 5, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo., where they raised two children. In 1964 Clifford and family moved to Emporia where he became owner of Emporia’s Firestone Store. They were married for 65 years before Clifford’s death in 2012.
Gloria was a lifelong member of St Andrew's, a Pink Lady at Newman Regional Health and a volunteer in the snack bar for many years. She was a member of PEO Chapter DI, an avid bridge player who, on occasion, had been known to finish a game as the sun was rising. Above all, Gloria loved her family and friends — she made everyone she met feel special.
Gloria will be lovingly remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother to her son Clifford (Skip) Stewart (Kay Ellen), Elmhurst, Ill., and daughter Marcia Law (Rick), Emporia, Kan: her grandchildren Timothy Stewart (Tiffany), Los Angeles; Megan Weibler (Matthew), Glen Ellyn, Ill; Ashley Rose (Greg), Ottawa, Kan; Adrianne DeLeon (Fredy), Shawnee, Kan; Adam Law, Olathe, Kan; Jennifer Cotteleer (Stephen), Los Angeles; Amy Cotteleer, Los Angeles and Kevin Cotteleer, Los Angeles: her great grandchildren Peyton, Olivia and Everly Weibler; Jack Lincoln Stewart; Harper Rose; Dominic DeLeon; Charlotte and Eloise Cotteleer.
