Gordan Francis Arb, 78, of Emporia, Kansas, died on March 15, 2013 at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.

Gordan was born on December 20, 1934 in Lebo, Kansas, the son of Louis Francis and Jessie Leah Danford Arb. He married Glenda Raedeene Graybeal on April 18, 1953 in Burlington, Kansas¸ she died on June 28, 2005 in Emporia.

He is survived by: his sons, Dan Arb and wife Janice of Emporia, and Gary Arb and wife Julie of Overland Park, Kansas; daughters, LuAnn Gilkison and husband Doug of Emporia, and Amy Lux and Husband David of Kingman, Kansas; four brothers, Willis Arb of Emporia, Gilbert Arb of Johnstown, Colorado, Raymond Arb of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Dennis Arb of Emporia; grandchildren, Matthew Arb and wife Elizabeth of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Justin Arb and wife Heaven of Americus, Dylan Gutierrez of Wichita, Kansas, Brooke Gutierrez of Emporia, Gavin Lux of Kingman, Kansas, and Jack and Bailey Arb of Overland Park, Kansas; great-Grandchildren, Skyler, Connor, and Maddie Arb of Americus, and Xander and Liam Arb of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He is preceded in by his wife Glenda of 52 years; brother, Melvin Arb; and two sisters, Dixie Baysinger Hathaway, and Phyllis LaNier.

Gordan worked for Walrafen Construction Company and helped build Emporia State University married housing, as well as numerous houses in northeast Emporia. He helped set up the initial machinery for the old Armour Plant, and developed numerous systems at Dolly Madison during his employment. He founded Arb’s Top Notch Tree Service in 1974 and ran it until 2010, when he put his chain saw down for the last time. After that he worked for both the LCAT and Railcrew Xpress, always going above and beyond his time and wages showing his selfless generosity in doing good for others.

Gordan loved horses and cowboyed for D.W. Evans, and was a member of the Reading Saddle Club in the 1950’s. He was a lifetime member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and 20 year member of the Kansas Arborist Association. Gordan and his wife Glenda loved to ride his Gold Wing motorcycle. He loved listening music at the Burlington Opry and regularly attended local music jam sessions. Gordan contributed to Emporia’s history in multiple ways, and took great pride in all of his work, and he will be greatly missed.

Cremation has taken place, with a memorial service at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. The family will greet friends from 12:00 until service time. A private inurnment will be held later at Lincoln Cemetery in Lebo. Memorial contributions to Emporia Friends of the Zoo may be sent in care of the funeral home.
