Greta Mae Morris

January 24, 1957 — August 10, 2017

Greta M. Morris (60), of Emporia died Thursday, August 10, 2017 at her home.

Greta Mae Dorsey the daughter of William and Mary Lou Rogers Dorsey was born Thursday, January 24, 1957 in Emporia. She worked as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant and Activities Director at Emporia Presbyterian Manor and at Crestview Nursing Home in Ottawa.

Greta had a massive heart attack at the age of 39. She was told by attending physicians that there were only three people in Kansas that had survived a massive heart attack, Greta was the third. She was in a coma for four days before recovering. She then fought her way back for the next three years. Then one day in December she announced that she was back. Since3 that day Greta was like a U.S. Marine, she got more done (for others) before 9 A.M. than the rest of us did all day. During the next 21 years after that illness, Greta also accomplished things for herself as well as others. Greta completed courses that allowed her to help the elderly, which she had wanted to do from the age of 8 years old. Those courses gave her knowledge and then she gained experience working at Crestview in Ottawa and the Presbyterian Manor in Emporia. She worked as a CNA as well as using her SSD and AD from Butler Community College. Greta worked until her massive heart attack. After that she could no longer work, with 1/3 of her heart being dead. Greta was able to be a partial care giver for five years for her grandmother, who lived to be 100 years old. She also cared for her parents in their senior years, and assisted her mother when her father needed more care than her mother could give, until he died.

These last years, it became harder for Greta to help. In March, her sister, Ana moved to Emporia to help Greta care for their mother Mary Lou McClain, until Mary passed this April. Greta was not able to bounce back. Her heart was now 2/3 dead. She tried to rest and concentrate on herself, but her heart was too weak. Twenty-one years after illness Greta went to glory.

She was a member of the St. James Missionary Baptist Church.

Greta is survived by two sons, Derrick Dupree Morris of Emporia and Dayton Duriel Morris of Hutchinson; a brother, Larry Dorsey of Emporia; a sister Ana Lissa Evans of Grand Rapids, MI; and one granddaughter.

Greta was preceded in death by her parents, William Dorsey and Mary Lou Dorsey McClain and a sister, Wilma Dorsey.
