Gretta May Rees Thomas, 94, Emporia, Kansas, died Thursday, December 2, 2010 at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor.

Gretta May Rees was born July 21, 1916 on the family farm south of Emporia. She was the daughter of Conwy C. and Hattie (Richards) Rees. She married Howard W. Thomas on June 5, 1945 at her parents home south of Emporia. He died August 27, 2000.

Surviving family members include: a son, David Thomas, Independence, Missouri; three daughters, Diane Cooke of Danbury, Connecticut, Janice Bryant of Dallas, Texas, and Verna Ilacqua of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, John Thomas Cooke, Bronwyn Cooke, David Cooke, and Josiah Thomas; as well as two great-grandchildren, Madelyn Ann Cooke and John Rhys Cooke.

She was preceded in death by her husband;a sister, Elizabeth Lambert; and her brother, Richard C. Rees.

She was a retired school teacher, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Emporia ( the former Westminster Presbyterian Church), and the United Presbyterian Women. Mrs. Thomas was a graduate of Chamness School District #24, Emporia High School, and Emporia State University.

Funeral services will be 1:30 PM Monday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home conducted by Pastor Mike Sorsen. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery on Upper Dry Creek, south of Emporia.
