H. Justine Curry

H. Justine Curry, 91, of Emporia, died on August 30, 2010 at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor in Emporia, Kansas.

Justine was born on February 17, 1919 in Greenwood County, southwest of Madison, the daughter of Daniel J. Curry, Jr. and Hazel Kates Curry.

She is survived by several cousins.

She is preceded in by her father Daniel J. Curry, Jr. in May of 1921, a sister Dannie Joan Curry in June of 1921, mother Hazel Kates Curry Grosy in June 1977, and her stepfather Albert C. Grosy in March of 1971.

Justine came to Emporia in 1929 and graduated from Emporia High School in 1936. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1941 from the Kansas State Teachers College, and received her Master’s degree in Library Science in 1954 from the Kansas Teachers College. Justine taught 10 years at Cheney and Eureka schools, then 15 years as a Librarian at the Lawrence High School. She then returned to Emporia and was the Librarian at the William Allen White Library at Emporia State University for 15 years until she retired in 1981.

Justine was a life member of the National Education Association, Emporia State Alumni Association, Kansas Retired Teachers Association, Kansas Historical Society, Greenwood County Historical Society, Lecompton Historical Society, and Friends of the Emporia Public Library. Other memberships include D.A.R. – Betty Washington Chapter, Lawrence, Kansas; Lyon County Historical Society, and Emporia Friends of the Zoo. She formerly belonged to the Emporia Retired Teachers Association, and P.E.O. Chapter Cg.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, September 4, 2010 at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor Chapel, Emporia. The service will be conducted by Mr. Ken Hanson of Emporia. A private inurnment will be at the Woods Cemetery, Greenwood County, Kansas. In Lieu of Flowers, memorials are suggested to the Emporia Friends of the Zoo, or the Lyon County Historical Society in care of the funeral home.
