Harold Michael Haag

April 15, 1915 — February 14, 2014

Harold Michael Haag, 98, of Olpe, Kansas died February 14, 2014, at Newman Regional Health, Emporia. He was the oldest living descendent of Michael and Ida Weinman Haag who moved to the Olpe area in 1891.

He was born at the original Haag Homestead on April 15, 1915, to Jacob E. and Antonette C. Snider Haag. He attended schools in the Olpe area and graduated from St. Joseph High School in Olpe.

After assisting his parents on the family farm in the 1930’s, he married Clara Kuhlmann at St. Joseph Church in Olpe, on November 15, 1941. She preceded him in death on October 18, 2004.

They farmed east of Hartford until 1946, when they moved to Elmendaro Township on Eagle Creek between Olpe and Hartford, a farm their children continue to farm and maintain. He was noted for being knowledgeable in raising soybeans and was instrumental in introducing them to the southern part of Lyon County.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gilbert, Ralph, James and Jerome; sisters, Luellen, Mildred McCue and Mary Ida Loewen.

He is survived by: sons, Charles and wife Marie of Olpe, Thomas and wife Ida Lynn of Auburn, Kansas, Harold “Harry” and wife Barbara of Hartford and Anthony “Tony” and wife Deborah of Olpe; a sister, Jeanette Gunkle of Stockton, California; eleven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Harold was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olpe and third degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a past member of the Stone School District #17 school board and a past member of the National Farmers Organization. He drove the school bus for Bucher District #75 and unification was a driver for South Lyon County.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olpe. The Rosary will be at recited at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday evening at the church. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Olpe.
