Harold Lee Ziegler

September 23, 1929 — October 23, 2016

Harold Lee Ziegler, who passed away peacefully at Newman Regional Health in Emporia on October 26, 2016, lived the life of a farmer and stockman every single day of his life.

Harold was born on September 23, 1929 at Newman Memorial Hospital in Emporia to Otto Julius and Ruth Belle (Mast) Ziegler. As a boy, he spent his days working alongside four brothers: Kenneth Wayne Ziegler (deceased), James Keith Ziegler (deceased), Stephen Julius Ziegler, Gary Lynn Ziegler; and two sisters: Velma Jeanne (Ziegler) Schroeder and Brenda Ruth (Ziegler) McPeak; on his parent’s farm and dairy.

Continuing family tradition, he chose to build his life right here in Emporia marrying Elsie Marie Baker on May 20, 1951. Together they had a son, Stanley Lee Ziegler and daughter, Lila Marie (Ziegler) Altis, whom they raised on their acreage in rural Lyon County.

Harold took great pride in his work, both on the farm and in his business, Ziegler Construction, which his son still owns and operates today. You could tell his crops by the perfectly straight rows. His cattle and hogs were fat and healthy. He loved and respected all animals from a pen of woolly steers to a litter of wild barn kittens.

His family grew quickly as grandchildren started to arrive and he found great joy in being their Grandpa. Harold and Elsie spent countless hours on school bleachers supporting the kids at every game, program, recital and graduation possible. His talents and interests reached beyond agriculture with a love of fishing, sports, and a good western or historical novel, to name a few. A practical, sincere and gentle man, he chose his words carefully. He saw the value and beauty in the simple things: a ripening strawberry on the vine, a rustling field of soybeans, a runt pig, or cup of black coffee. Harold lived his life honestly, loyally, and with his whole heart.

Throughout the days of his life, he served as a strong example of leadership and integrity in everything he did. An example which his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will continue to strive to follow.

Harold is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elsie Marie Ziegler, who still resides at their home; his son’s family, Stanley and Denise Ziegler; and his daughter’s family, Lila and Art Altis. He is also lovingly remembered by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Krista Marie (Altis), Justin Hance, and their son, Beckett Lee; Joshua Allen Ziegler and Emily Ziegler; Cody Lee Ziegler, Emily Ziegler, and their sons Evan Lee and Drew James; Heather Dale (Altis), Matt Wedel, and their daughter, Chase Ryann; David Lee Ziegler and Kylie Ziegler; and Madison Avery Ziegler.
