Hattie Caroline Rathke, 98, of Americus, Kansas, died Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Flint Hills Care Center in Emporia. She had been able to remain in her home until the last week.

Hattie was born March 5, 1916 in Herrington, Kansas, the daughter of Henry B. and Lena C. Young Vahsholtz. She married Earnest C. Rathke on October 8, 1939 in Olpe, Kansas. He died on May 21, 1978 at home.

Surviving family members include a son, Larry Rathke of Americus; two daughters, Joyce Swift of Matfield Green, Kansas and Sandra Graham of Strong City, Kansas; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson on the way.

She is preceded in death by her husband; a grandson, Dustin Graham; brothers, Martin Vahsholtz, Henry “Hank” Vahsholtz, Richard Vahsholtz, Verner Vahsholtz, Rhinehart Vahsholtz, Milton Vahsholtz, Melvin Vahsholtz, Alfred Vahsholtz, and an infant brother, Albert Vahsholtz; and sisters, Katherine Strauss, Irma Rathke, and Eleanor Conroy.

Hattie was a homemaker. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 5, 2014 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Emporia. Burial will follow at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, west of Olpe.
