Helen Elizabeth Waters, 89, died November 16, 2011 at her home in Emporia, Kansas.

Helen Elizabeth Rude was born December 3, 1921 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the daughter of John Randolf & Rena (Meek) Rude, Sr. Helen married Harry J. Waters in Marshalltown, Iowa on January 25, 1945. He died February 12, 2008 in Emporia.

Helen moved to Emporia in 1954. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Emporia, P.E.O. Chapter DI, Women’s Golf Association of the Emporia Country Club, and she was a volunteer for the Hetlinger Development Center and the Retarded Children’s Center. Helen was instrumental in founding the Retarded Children’s Center and Sheltered Workshop. She was also a guardian for mentally-challenged adults that worked at the shelter.

Helen is survived by: two sons, Randy Waters of Olathe, Kansas and Dr. Scott Waters of Emporia; daughter, Hatsie Waters Lawrence of Lenexa, Kansas; brother, John Rude, Jr. of Marshalltown, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Janet Rude Watson.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Congregational Church in Emporia. Pastor Andrew McHenry will be officiating.
