Henry James Dick, Jr. M.D., Emporia, Kansas, died Monday, November 21, 2011 at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. He was 84.
Henry J. Dick, Jr. was born September 3, 1927 at Emporia, the son of Henry J. and Blanche L. (Grandpre) Dick. He married Elizabeth Bishop in 1954, they later divorced.
Surviving family members include his sons, John Dick, of Yates Center, Kansas, and Henry Dick, III, of Topeka, Kansas; a daughter, Janet Wilson, of Kansas City, Kansas; brothers, Jerry P. Dick, and William J. Dick, both of Emporia; and five grandchildren, Elizabeth O’Halloran, Erica Dick, Charlie Dick, Elliott Wilson, and Lindy Wilson.
Dr. Dick was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia. He was also a member of the Elks, American Legion, and several medical professional organizations.
He attended Emporia schools and one year at the College of Emporia before being drafted into the U.S. Army. He served as a medical technician in Alaska before returning to school and graduating from the University of Kansas in 1950. He worked in the medical field until he entered Kansas University Medical School in 1954, graduating in 1958. He completed his residency at Saint Joseph Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, and was licensed to practice medicine in both Missouri and Kansas.
Dr. Dick had been in general family practice for 39 years, commencing his practice in Burlington, Kansas, later practicing in Chanute and Emporia, where he retired in 1997.
Henry enjoyed hunting and fishing, flying airplanes, and playing ragtime piano.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday November 25, 2011 at 10:00 AM, with Father Rich Warsnak, Celebrant. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Emporia.
A memorial has been established for nursing scholarships with the Newman Division of Nursing at Emporia State University. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
