Iliff Beatrice Nicholas

Iliff Beatrice Nicholas, Emporia, Kansas, and formerly of Hamilton, Kansas, died Sunday, April 10, 2011 at her apartment at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor, Emporia, Kansas. She was 88.

Iliff Beatrice Burkey was born September 16, 1922 at Lamont, Kansas, the daughter of William and Rose (McCullough) Burkey. She married Edward Myron Nicholas at San Luis Obispo, California on January 26, 1942. He died March 30, 2005.

Surviving family members include: daughters, Rosalee A. Lovell, Emporia, Kansas, Iris M. Neuenswander, Gas, Kansas; sons, Melvin D. Nicholas, Wilton, Iowa, and David L. Nicholas, Altamont, Kansas; four brothers, Grover Burkey, Charleston, South Carolina, Richard Burkey, Englewood, Florida, John Horton, Kansas City, Missouri, and Robert Horton, Raytown, Missouri; two sisters, Ina Mae Huth, Raytown, Missouri, and Leona Horton, Hartford, Kansas; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two infant grandchildren, two sisters, and two brothers.

Mrs. Nicholas was a member of the Hamilton (Kansas) United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Women of the church. She had been active in a Home Demonstration Unit, 4-H, and was a 4-H leader for many years.

Iliff and her husband lived most of their married life on a farm south of Hamilton, Kansas. She moved to Emporia in 2005. She and her husband were active in the Greenwood County Farm Bureau and had received many awards for soil conservation, including a Lifetime Achievement Award.

She enjoyed gardening, raising both vegetables and beautiful flowers.

Funeral services will be at the Hamilton United Methodist Church, Hamilton, Kansas on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 1:00 PM. The service will be conducted by Pastor Mark Demus of the church. Interment will be in the Janesville Cemetery, west of Hamilton.

The casket will be open at the church in Hamilton after 11:00 AM Wednesday, and before that at the funeral home in Emporia.
