Imogene "Imo" Mccosh

February 23, 1918 — September 14, 2012

Imogene (Imo) McCosh passed away peacefully on September 14, 2012 at The Sterling House of Emporia, Kansas. She was 94 years old.

Imo was born to Walter and Edna Dunn on February 23, 1918 in Center Township of Lyon County, Kansas. The Flint Hills nurtured her roods. She loved them and the people here throughout her life.

She moved to Emporia as a young woman, and later served Emporia State University for many years within the Division of Student Affairs. Always an advocate for young people, she was well suited for her position. She formed many lifelong friendships at ESU and far beyond; carrying those with her as she journeyed forward.

Imo was a woman with a good many interests. She painted and sketched in charcoal elegantly. Her home was eclectically enhanced by the works of other artists, bits of stone, driftwood and things that caught her eye as having their own intrinsic beauties. She cooked creatively. Currants, grapes, elderberries, and sandhill plums, all from the Flint Hills, went into her jellies and wild game dinners. She grew at least one new thing each year in her organic garden. She wrote, and was a member of the Quivera Literary Club.

She pursued studies at ESU across subjects in art, literature, creative writing, history, and political science. She was a staunch supporter of the Democratic Party. Her community volunteer work spanned from actively supporting political candidates through public relations work for the Humane Society of the Flint Hills, Inc. The assortment of her fascinations, endeavors, and accomplishments that could represent Imo McCosh was wound through with one strong cord. She was steadfast in her love of people and Emporia. She would want that told.

Imo is survived by her son, Jeff McCosh; and her grandson, Austin McCosh.

A memorial service is planned for Friday, October 5, 2012. The service will be held at 3:00 P.M. in the Blue Key Room of the Memorial Union on the Emporia State University Campus, conducted by Pastor Verdell Taylor, Jr., St. Luke A.M.E. Church, Lawrence, Kansas.

Memorial contributions to the ESU Foundation, the Susan B. Anthony Scholarship Fund (in care of the ESU Foundation), or The Humane Society of the Flint Hills, Inc., may be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
