J. Wayne Bastin

J. Wayne Bastin, 82, of Emporia, a longtime highly respected teacher, coach, and principal of Lowther Junior High (Emporia Middle School), died Friday, February 5, 2016 in Wichita, Kansas.

J. Wayne Bastin, the son of Clifford and Cecile Smith Bastin, was born on October 25, 1933 in Elmdale, Kansas. He Graduated from Elmdale High School in 1951. He was a member of the football team that posted three undefeated seasons. As a freshman at the College of Emporia, he was a letterman for the undefeated football team. He later graduated from Emporia State University with a bachelor’s degree in 1955 and a master’s degree in 1964.

He taught and coached at Westmoreland High for two years and Hamilton High for three years before coming to Emporia in 1960. He coached an undefeated football team in 1963 and an undefeated wrestling team in 1964 at Lowther Junior High.

He was named “Man of the Week” by the Emporia Gazette in October of 1963 and was featured in the “Community Spotlight” in May of 1995. Upon retiring from teaching, he worked part-time at Bluestem Farm and Ranch for eighteen and a half years.

During his tenure as principal he was instrumental in the development of the middle school concept in 1973-74 for the largest middle school in Kansas, and the construction of the current middle school building. He served as an adjunct professor at ESU and was a representative from Kansas to the White House Conference on Children and Youth in Washington D.C. in 1970.

He married Norma Jean Dawson on January 21, 1955 in Clements, Kansas. She preceded him in death on June 8, 2011.

He is survived by two sons, Craig and his wife Sandy Bastin of Emporia, and Russell Bastin of Wichita; a brother, Harold and his wife Margaret Bastin of Kansas City, Missouri; a grandson, Storm Bastin, and a step-granddaughter, Erica Carman both of Kansas City, Kansas.

His funeral will be 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the Emporia Presbyterian Church west campus. Pastor Phyllis Stutzman of the church will officiate. The family will visit with friends from 10:00 A.M. until 11 A.M. at the church. Cremation will follow the service. Interment will be in the Stoehr Cemetery near Elmdale, Kansas at a later date.
