James K. Snook, (84), of Emporia passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017 at the Holiday Resort Care Center.
Jim was born February 24, 1933, in Wichita, the son of William Robert and Margaret Snyder Snook. He graduated from Wichita East High School in 1951, served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955, and earned his B.S. in Geology in 1958 from Wichita University.
He married Patricia Wise on May 27, 1959. They were a strong unit until her passing on November 4, 2004. He was a wonderful father to his children: Lori Snook of DeLand, Fl.; Richard Snook of Emporia, Bill Snook of Kansas City. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Persis Stoenner and Bill Snook, Jr.
Jim worked as a petroleum geologist until his retirement in 1989. He and the family followed the job: in Wichita; Tulsa; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (twice)\; Midland, TX (twice); Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and Dallas, TX. He and Pat moved to Emporia upon his retirement. He also published two books, Mental Wanderings and Ice Age Extinctions.
He was a devoted member of the New Seekers Sunday School class at the First United Methodist Church in Emporia and the Emporia Lions Club. He belonged to the Emporia Camera Club for many years, with (among other honors) his photograph of the Columbia Crevasse, winning Best in Show in 2006. He was an accomplished painter, a player of the cornet and flugelhorn, and a noted practitioner of dry wit and Daddy jokes.
Friends may visit with the family at Roberts-Blue-Barnett on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 9:00 A.M. Followed by a Graveside service at Memorial Lawn Cemetery at 10:00 A.M. A Celebration of Life will be held at the First United Methodist Church 823 Merchant, Emporia at 11:30 A.M. Dr. Harvey Foyle will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts to Camp Wood in Elmdale or the Emporia Friends of the Zoo. Donations may be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett.
