James C. Stolfus

January 26, 1927 — April 13, 2016

James C. Stolfus, 89, Emporia, passed away Wednesday evening, April 13, 2016 at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor, where he was a resident.

Jim was born January 26, 1927 in Newton, Kansas, the son of Roy and Gladys (Jones) Stolfus. He married Beverly Merwin June 6, 1948 in Emporia. She died June 13, 2009.

Surviving family members include daughters, Janice C. Jacka, Topeka, Kansas and Jolene Pennington, Centerville, Kansas; sisters, Vesta Kramer, Denver, Colorado and Carol Cave, Grand Junction, Colorado; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly, and brother, Lee.

Jim attended grades 1 through 5 at Trailer Grade School in Lyon County, Junior High at the Butcher Laboratory School at the Teachers College in Emporia. He was a 1945 graduate of Emporia High School. In 1945 he entered the U.S. Army, receiving his basic training at Fort Hood, Texas. He served in Italy with the 488th Port Battalion (Amphibious) and the 115th Military Police Company. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1947.

From 1947 to 1951 he attended Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. He received his Master of Science in Education in 1955 and Specialist in Educational Curriculum in 1967, both from KSTC.

His 40 years in public school education included teaching 6th grade in Independence (1950-52), Elementary School Principal in Gridley, Kansas (1952-54), Junior High Principal, Marysville, Kansas (1954-57), he served as Superintendent of Schools of Haysvile, Kansas (1957-1966), Osage City, Kansas (1966-1980), Lincoln, Kansas (1980-1990). He retired in 1990. From 1954 to 1980 he was an education instructor for many curriculum courses for the Teachers College of Emporia State University.

Mr. Stolfus was a life member of the National Education Association, a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, Lowry-Funston Post #1980, VFW, Emporia Masonic Lodge #12, A.F. & A.M., Arab Shriners, Topeka Scottish Rite Free Mason, and a former member of the Sertoma Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching college sports and woodworking.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. The service will be conducted by Pastor Lee Hoskins. Interment will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery with Masonic services by Emporia Masonic Lodge #12, A.F. & A.M. and Military honors by Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M.
