Jean Mitchell Cooper, 83 of Emporia, Kansas formerly of Chanute, Kansas died on November 15, 2017 at Midland House in Topeka, Kansas. She was born on November 3, 1934 in Kiowa County, Kansas, the daughter of Clarence E. and Mable E. Rosenberger Cook.

Jean graduated from Greensburg High School in 1952, then attended Kansas State Teachers College. She married Terry Mitchell in Chanute, Kansas on September 6, 1953. They were divorced in 1958. She married James F. Cooper on December 25, 1990 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He preceded her in death on May 1, 2001.

Jean began her career in Chanute while working for the Chanute Building & Loan Association now known as Home Savings Bank of Chanute. She retired in 1996 as Executive Vice President. She was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Chanute, serving on the vestry, altar guild and as a lector. Her service included being an active member of the Episcopal Churchwomen, representative to the Dioceses of Kansas at the National Convention of Episcopal Women where she received Honored Woman in 2009; she also served as Treasurer of the Alliance of Churches for Christian Living and the USD #413 Foundation. Her community service included the Board of Directors for Home Savings Bank and the Neosho Memorial Regional Hospital Foundation.

In 2012 Jean moved to Emporia to be closer to her family. She was an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Emporia Friends of the Zoo and Camp Wood YMCA. She is survived by a son, Rick Mitchell and his wife, Colleen, of Emporia; three grandchildren and one great-grand daughter; Ashley Mitchell of Goodyear, Arizona, Blake Mitchell and his wife, Brandi, and daughter, Eliza, of Emporia and Allie Mitchell of Goodyear, Arizona; a sister, Billie Huckriede of Marion, Kansas, and four half-sisters, Carolyn Wheeler of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Peggy Pollay of Sun City West, Arizona, Linda Hamilton of Gunnison, Colorado and Nina Levens of Anthony, Kansas.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Emporia, Kansas on Monday, December 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with a graveside service and inurnment at Elmwood Cemetery on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Chanute, Kansas. Her family invites friends to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church’s Parish Hall for lunch after the service on December 4th. They will meet with friends and family in Sawyer Hall at Grace Episcopal Church in Chanute, Kansas on December 5th following the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to one of the following: Grace Episcopal Church or Cherry Street Youth Center both in Chanute, Kansas, or St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church or the David Traylor Zoo of Emporia.
