Jeanne M. Butcher, 95, of Emporia, Kansas, died Monday, December 28, 2015 at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.
Jeanne was born May 23, 1920 in Pittsburg, Kansas, the daughter of George and Julia (Schommer) Malcolm. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in English at Pittsburg State University and later, a Master’s in English at Northwestern University. Jeanne taught English at Hutchinson High School and then became an English instructor at the College of Emporia, followed by several years at the Emporia Public Library. She was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, the First Congregational Church in Emporia, Business Women’s Professional Association, and Etude Study Club. She wrote a weekly book review column for the Emporia Gazette for several years.
Jeanne married Dr. Stephen J. Butcher in Hutchinson, Kansas, on August 10, 1952. She is survived by daughter, Janet Shaw and husband Mark of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and two grandsons, Stephen Shaw of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Patrick Shaw of Washington, D.C.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Janet Malcolm.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and an inurnment service will be held at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia later in the spring.
