Jim "Sarge" Haynes

April 16, 1934 — July 17, 2010

Jim “Sarge” Haynes, devoted husband, father and grandpa, died at his home in Olpe, Saturday morning, July 17, 2010. He was 76.

He began a 29 year career in law enforcement with 2 years as Undersheriff in Montgomery County, Kansas, followed by 3 years with the Forestry, Fish, & Game Commission and the final 23 years as a proud member of the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP). During his KHP career, in addition to his regular duties, he spent 14 years as a pursuit driving instructor at the KHP Academy in Salina. “Sarge” retired from law enforcement in 1988. After his retirement he drove a school bus for USD #252 in Olpe for 17 years.

Jim was a veteran of the United States Navy, enlisting after graduation from Cherryvale High School in 1951. The son of Dennis E. and Lillian M. (Boss) Haynes, he was born April 16, 1934 in Cherryvale, Kansas. He married Arylene Henderson on May 4, 1956 at Cherryvale.

Jim was a member of the Olpe United Methodist Church, Flinthills Antique Power Association, Brinkman-Price Post #342 of the American Legion, Olpe, KS, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #15017 in Cherryvale, Kansas, and Fortitude Masonic Lodge #107, A.F. & A.M. of Independence, Kansas, the National Rifle Association, and the Kansas Peace Officers Association. He was a member of the Olpe Lions Club for many years prior to his illness, and served as a past president of the Bluestem Swingers Square Dance Club.

He is survived by his wife, Arylene, of the home, two sons, and their families, Jim & Carol Haynes (grand children, Mark and Michael ) of Sugar Land, Texas and Tom & Kathleen Haynes (grandchildren Brittany & McKenzie) of Salina, KS, plus a host of friends and other relatives

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia at 3:00 PM Wednesday, conducted by Pastor Lucille Barb, Olpe United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, west of Olpe.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:00
