Joan Marie (Pummell) Hummel died peacefully on December 11, 2018 at the age of 74. Joan was born on September 13, 1944 in Blanchester, Ohio. She was later adopted at the age of three by Homer and Mabel Pummell. She joined the army upon graduation from high school, and was stationed at Fort Sam Huston in San Antonio, Texas, where she met the love of her life, Scott. They later married on 9/3/1965, shortly before she was honorably discharged from the army on September 24, 1965. She attended Eastern Michigan University where she graduated with a degree in education. After graduating they welcomed their first child, Wendy Dawn, followed by Devin Scott. Joan moved with Scott to Emporia, so he could attend the School of Nursing in 1976. Several years later, the couple welcomed, their third child David Thomas. Joan attended Emporia State University continuing her education. Joan spent much of her life substitute teaching in the Emporia, Americus and Burlington area.
Joan would drop whatever she was doing to help anyone in need and was involved in many organizations. She was a generous individual who loved soccer, baking, and sewing. She was an active soccer mom, TRYSA supporter, and member of Altrussa, and often volunteered as a docent at the Emporia Zoo.
Joan is survived by her children, Wendy of Americus, Devin (Joselyn) of St Louis, Mo, David (Linette) of Columbus, Ohio, 4 grandchildren Saige (20), Olivia (14), Addison (8) , and Lensey (5), and a sister Joy. She is preceded in death by her husband, Scott, who passed away December 27, 2003, parents, and 2 sisters Jill, and Jean.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 1:00pm at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. The service will be conducted by Pastor Brenda Ulrich, Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military honors by Lowry-Funston Post #1980, V.F.W. and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion. Cremation has occurred. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joan’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Emporia Friends of the Zoo in care of the funeral home, PO Box #175, Emporia, Kansas 66801
