Joan Louise Jackson, 77 of rural Allen passed away at home on Thursday, December 29, 2016. Joan was born on January 13, 1939, in Enid, Oklahoma, the oldest child of Victor and Leola Smith Passow. The family moved to rural Allen, Kansas in 1945. Joan married her high school sweetheart Montie Lee Jackson on June 16, 1955.
Survivors include Montie of the home, Joan’s mother Leola Passow, Topeka, brother Richard Passow, Topeka, children Daniel L. Jackson (Cindy) of rural Council Grove, Larry R. Jackson of rural Allen, and Linda Jackson Schuetz (Greg) of rural Paxico, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. She is preceded in death by Deborah L. Jackson (infant daughter), and father Victor Passow.
Joan was one of the first non-traditional students, going to school while working and raising a family with Montie, graduating with her BA in Education from Emporia State University in 1974 and her Masters of Education in 1980. She began teaching in the North Lyon County School District in 1974 as an elementary education teacher and in 1980 transitioned to teaching special education through the USD 253 Special Education Cooperative. She taught for a total of 25 years before joining Montie in retirement in 1999. She and Montie enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing and family during their retirement.
Joan was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church Ruth Circle, Messiah quilting group, H.M.S Club and the Jolly Jaynes Card Club, whom she dearly loved.
A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, January 3rd, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church. A private inurnment at Bushong Cemetary will be held at a later date. The family has designated Memorial contributions to the Education Department of the Messiah Lutheran Church or North Lyon County Youth Association in care of Roberts Blue Barnett Funeral Home.
