Joan Mounkes, age 87, passed away on Saturday, February 20 in Emporia, Kansas, and went home to see her Lord Jesus Christ. She was born in Harveyville, Kansas, the youngest daughter of Russell and Mildred Akers.
A lifelong resident of Emporia, she graduated from Emporia High School. Joan loved all kinds of music and played the piano by ear. She also enjoyed singing in choir through high school, and later in her church choir, often singing solo parts. She was a country girl at heart and loved gardening and going fishing.
In her early years, she was a sales associate for J.C. Penney and later, a seamstress for Crawford Manufacturing Company. Her home daycare touched many lives.
Family was important to Joan, and she was supportive of her children's and grandchildren’s activities. Family reunions and reconnecting with extended family in the Harveyville and Eskridge areas were an important part of her life as well.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Paul and Ivan; two sisters, Elizabeth and Norma; and also by her so,n Danny Mounkes.
Joan is survived by her sister, Lois Krehbiel; her children, Lawrence Gerstner, Jr. and wife MaryLyn, Debbie Andriessen and husband Roel, Brenda Schweer and husband Ron, Jackie Schmidt and husband Glen, and Tom Mounkes. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered for her upbeat outlook on life, and her love and caring support of her family.
Funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. Interment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia. Pastor Ken Armstrong of the Westside Baptist Church in Emporia will be officiating.
