Joel Gutierrez, Emporia, passed away at Newman Regional Health, Emporia on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at the age of 88.
Joel was born February 12, 1929 at Plymouth, Kansas, the son of Feliciano and Lola (Paul) Gutierrez. Joel and Lupe Mendoza were united in marriage at Emporia on June 23, 1956. She survives of the home.
Surviving family members include his wife, son; Joel V. (Anna) Gutierrez, Jr. , Wichita, KS, daughter; Christine (Steve) Kolmer, Emporia, brother; Paul Gutierrez, Emporia, as well as grandchildren; Angela (Reynaldo) Torres, Gina Gutierrez, Joseph (Emalie) Gutierrez, Mark Kolmer, Sarah (RJ) Santigate, and great-grandchildren; Diego Gutierrez and Santiago Torres.
He was preceded in death by brothers; Manuel and Pete Gutierrez, and sisters; Frances Perez, Louise Serna, Rachel Skalitzky, and Rebecca Delgado.
For 36 years Joel had been employed in the maintenance services division of Emporia State University, retiring in 1991. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having service in the United States Air Force. He was a member of Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion.
Joel was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 10:30 AM. Father Brandon Farrar, celebrant. Following the mass military honors will be presented by Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion. Cremation will follow. Inurnment, at a later date, will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery
The Rosary will be recited Friday at 7:00 PM at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home
