Dr. John P. Brockhouse

September 15, 1931 — August 20, 2011

Our family celebrates the memory of Dr. John P. Brockhouse, who died at his home in Emporia, Kansas, on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the age of 79.

He was a native Emporian, born September 15, 1931, the son of Herschel Glenn “Brock” and Jane Soden Laws Brockhouse. He graduated from Emporia High School, and then Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University). He received his M.D. degree in 1957 from the Kansas University School of Medicine. Dr. Brockhouse served his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at Menorah Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. He began his medical practice in Emporia with the Medical Arts Clinic in 1961, and retired in 1998.

Dr. Brockhouse was a member of the Flint Hills County Medical Society, Kansas Medical Society, American Medical Association, American Society of Internal Medicine, and the American College of Physicians. Previously, he was President of the Hospital Medical Staff, Kansas Society of Internal Medicine, and the County Medical Society.

He was a member of the Emporia Country Club, and served on its Board of Directors and also as President. He was an avid golfer, and at times it actually looked like he knew what he was doing on the golf course.

During his career, he served on the Board of Directors of the Emporia Chamber of Commerce, the Lyon County Red Cross, the Flint Hills Community Health Center, and the Kansas Foundation for Medical Care. He was a Councilor for the Flint Hills Medical Society for several years. He gave lectures to the Lyon County Cancer Society, the Emergency Medical Technicians classes, and to nursing courses for coronary care units and continuing education. He was an alternate delegate to the A.M.A. from Kansas. He was also a clinical assistant professor, Department of Medicine, K.U. School of Medicine in Wichita, Kansas.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Emporia.

On November 11, 1962, Dr. Brockhouse and Alice Marie Butler, of Neosho Falls, Kansas, were married in Emporia, Kansas.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Brockhouse of the home; two sons, John G. Brockhouse and David C. Brockhouse, both of Columbia, Missouri; one daughter, Kara Jane Burry of New Woodstock, New York; two granddaughters, Sabra Brockhouse and Emma Burry; two grandsons, Max Brockhouse and Ethan Burry; two nephews, Dr. W. Brock Kretsinger and John Kretsinger, both of Emporia.

Dr. Brockhouse was preceded in death by his parents, H. Glenn and Jane Soden Brockhouse; and his sister, Kathryn Kretsinger.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial reception in his honor will be held at the Emporia Country Club on Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 4:30 P.M. until 7:00 P.M.
