John Marion Dickinson

John Marion Dickinson, 72, Emporia, Kansas, formerly of Hoyt, passed away Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Midland Care Hospice, Topeka, Kansas.

John was born at Topeka on August 16, 1940, the son of Edward M. and Laura A. (Barker) Dickinson. He married Karen Blomberg November 25, 1972. She survives.

Other family members include: his son, David Alan (Debora) Dickinson of Moore, Oklahoma; daughter, Pamela Jean (Jesse) Flores, El Cajon, California; brother, Joe Dickinson (Sheryle) of Newton, Kansas; sister, Joan Edson (Lee) Overland Park, Kansas; three grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In 1954, the family purchased a Mobil service station in Hoyt, Kansas, where John started working as a freshman in high school. John graduated Hoyt High School in 1958, and attended Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas for one year. While attending school in Ottawa, John worked at a gas station. Later he moved to Emporia, where he was employed for 17 years as an auto body mechanic and shop foreman at Longbine Chevy/Olds. He then worked at Jayhawk Body Shop in Topeka, until he retired in 2005.

John and his wife, Karen, delivered meals for the Friendship Meals Program in Emporia, and were members of Senior Patrol of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. He loved cars, and was an avid fan of NASCAR.

Funeral services will be at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. The service will be conducted by Pastor Chester Morris. A graveside service will be held at Hoyt Cemetery, Hoyt, Kansas at 3:00 P.M. that afternoon.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening, September 25, 2012, from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Memorial contributions to Friendship Meals (Emporia) or Midland Care Hospice may be sent in care of the funeral home.
