John A. "Doc" Baxter

John A."Doc" Baxter (77), died Thursday, November 3rd at Aldersgate Village in Topeka.

John Andrew Baxter, the son of Robert J. and Lena Dolzadelli Baxter was born on September 8, 1939 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He earned his B.S. from the University of New Mexico and received his Master’s degree in HPERA from Emporia State University in 1967. He was an Army veteran and served as an assistant athletic trainer at West Point.

John was the head athletic trainer at Emporia State from 1966-2012 and was named the Director of Athletic Medicine at Emporia State at the start of the 2010-2011 season, retiring at the conclusion of the 2011-2012 academic year.

He was a member of the ESU Athletics Hall of Honor, Emporia State HPER Hall of Honor, the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame, and the Kansas Athletic Trainers’ Society Hall of Fame. He was a 2003 recipient of the University Service Citation Award and the 1995 Darrell E. Wood Service Award from The Teachers College. "Doc" Baxter was honored by his peers for his "total commitment to professionalism and devotion to Hornet Athletics." He has served as the coordinator for the athletic training facilities at the NAIA National Basketball Tournament in Kansas City, MO.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He married Pamela Lutes on February 14, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She survives of the home. Other surviving family members include: a son, Joshua (Kindel) Baxter of Mission; a daughter, Rachael (Robert) Richardson of Emporia; a stepson, Jeffrey (Shelly) Lutes of Emporia; a stepdaughter, Amy (Brent) Lee of Columbus, OH; two brothers, James Baxter of Albuquerque, NM and William Baxter of Gilbert, AZ; a sister, Mary Helen Mallow of Vienna, VA.; and several nieces and nephews. Ten grandchildren also survive.

The Rosary and visitation will be Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 5:30 P.M. at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 A.M., November 9, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Father Brandon Farrar will be the celebrant. Cremation will follow the mass.
