John H. Schmidt, the son of Elmer and Ruth Pelzl Schmidt was born February 27, 1950 in Emporia. He had worked for IBP (Tyson Meats) pulling hides. He was a drag racer, former member of the NHRA, a NASCAR fan, a mechanic and custom fabricator for cars, and as a friend said a “well known hoarder”. He loved animals, taking in stray cats and dogs and especially his beloved collies all named Joe.
John never married or had children of his own, but is survived by his longtime companion, Sherry Hensley of Alma, and her three boys, Clay, Kane, and Ryne, whom he treated as his own. He was as proud of them as any father would be. He was preceded in death by his parents.
