Joseph Steffes Markowitz

July 27, 1921 — December 20, 2013

Joseph Steffes Markowitz, 92, of Olpe, Kansas, died on December 20, 2013, at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.

Joe was born on July 27, 1921 in Olpe, the son of Bernard and Elizabeth Steffes Markowitz. He married Marie Ann Hohne on May 29, 1948 in Olpe.

He is survived by Marie and four children, Dave and wife Jane Markowitz of Emporia, Steve and wife Debbie Markowitz of Olpe, Mary and husband Tim Ingoldsby of Littleton, Colorado, and Lisa and husband Gary Morrison of Westminster, Colorado; one brother, John Markowitz of Olpe; eleven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents;his brother, George Markowitz; and twin sisters, Sr. Josette Markowitz, OFM, and Sr. Georgette Markowitz, OFM.



Joe was co-owner of Mark II Lumber in Emporia until he retired in 1988. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Olpe. He served six years in the United States Marine Corps during WWII, aboard the USS Enterprise. He was injured in the Battle of Santa Cruz and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of the Ball-McColm Post #5 American Legion, and Lowry-Funston Post #1980 Veteran of Foreign Wars, the Lion’s Club and the Olpe Knights of Columbus.

Upon retirement he and his wife purchased and refurbished “The Barn”. Through the years it served as the Old Mill Antique Store and always as a family gathering place. Joe and Marie shared their love of woodworking and antique furniture, along with gardening and good company. His kindness, patience and talent will be missed by all who knew him.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 27, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olpe. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the church. Interment with military honors by Ball-McColm Post #5 American Legion, and Lowry-Funston Post #1980 Veteran of Foreign Wars will follow the service at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Olpe.
