Joyce Anne (Gibbs) Courtney, 94, of Emporia, Kansas, died Monday, March 16, 2015 at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor apartments.

Joyce Anne Gibbs, the daughter of Lloyd Raymond and Mamie Eugenia (Fuller) Gibbs Simkins, was born January 2, 1921 in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Her father, Lloyd died when she was seven months of age, and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Stanley A. Simkins in Reading, Kansas.

She graduated from Reading High School, and then earned a Bachelor of Science in Education, a Master of Science in Psychology, and also a Certified Reading Specialist certification from Emporia State University.

She taught for two years at Lyon County Rural School District #105, one year at Washington School in Great Bend, Kansas, and twenty-seven years at Burlington Elementary School in Burlington, Kansas.

Joyce married Roy Irvin Courtney on June 8, 1947, at First Christian Church in Emporia. Together they had a farm near Burlington from 1947-1982, and moved to Emporia in 1982.

They were members of First United Methodist Church. She was also a lifetime member of the Kansas Retired Teachers Association and a member of Emporia Retired Teachers and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was inducted into the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame in Dodge City, Kansas, in 1983.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her husband (Nov. 22, 1995); an infant daughter, Karen Beth (Oct. 27, 1951); son, Roy David (Nov. 24, 2000); a brother, Jerry Simkins (Dec. 29 2003); and a sister, Betty (Simkins) Hulska (Sept. 7, 2007).

She is survived by her granddaughter, Andrea Courtney, Wichita, Kansas; her brothers, Charles Simkins, Summerville, South Carolina, and Larry Simkins, Gilbert, Arizona; and her sisters Lois Pfloughoft, Kent, Washington, Colene Taber, San Diego, California, and Martha Rowe, Littleton, Colorado.

Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Emporia Presbyterian Manor, located at 2300 Industrial Road, Emporia, on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 1:00 P.M.
