Kathryn Lucile Duffield of Emporia died Friday, August 20, 2010 at Sterling House, where she had resided the last five years. She was 98 years old.
  
  
  She was born November 21, 1911 in Emporia, the daughter of Clarence Morris & Laura (Atkinson) Hughes. She married Homer Louis Duffield on September 3, 1938. He died June 21, 1963.
  
  
  Kathryn graduated from Emporia High School and the Emporia Business College. She worked at Citizens National Bank and later in the business office of Kansas State Teachers College (ESU) until she retired.
  
  
  Kathryn was as member of the First United Methodist Church; the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Transportation Union; National Association of Retired Railway Employees of Emporia; ladies auxiliaries of both Lowry-Funston Post 1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ball-McColm Post 5, American Legion; and the Newman Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered at the blood bank, Newman Hospital as a pink lady, the election board and also for book sales at the Emporia Public Library.
  
  
  Kathryn is survived by two daughters: Debra Dee Carter of Emporia, and Delores Kay Smith of Kansas City, Mo.; three grandsons: Darren Carter of Wichita, Dustin Carter of Emporia, Skylar Lyon of Charlottesville, Va., one granddaughter, Danielle Carter of Overland Park, and four great-grandchildren.
  
  
  She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Clerico and Emily Robohn of Emporia; three brothers, George, LeRoy and Arthur Hughes.
  
  
  Her remains will be donated to the University of Kansas Medical School for educational research.
  
  
  A celebration of life will be held at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, Wednesday, August 25, at 4:00 P.M. The service will be conducted by Pastor Jayne Duncan, First United Methodist Church, emporia.
  
  
  Memorial contributions may be made to the Walnut Park Fund in Emporia, or to the Beta Sigma Phi Heart Fund, with gifts sent in care of the funeral home.
