Kay L. Bowers, Emporia, Kansas, died at her home on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the age of 75.

Kay Lorraine Bates was born at Emporia, Kansas on December 3, 1935, the daughter of Alfred Lorraine and Raye Lucille (Gilbert) Bates. She married Ronald S. Thomas, whom she later divorced. On October 30, 1971, she married Martin J. “Jerry” Bowers. He died October 10, 1986.

Surviving family members include: her son, Kenton Thomas, and his wife, Carol, Emporia; her grandsons, Aaron Thomas of Kansas City, Missouri, and Evan Thomas of Topeka, Kansas; her mother, Lucille Bates of Emporia; stepchildren, Fred Bowers, Conway, Arkansas, and Vicki Herrick, Olathe, Kansas; and six step-grandchildren.

Kay was a graduate of Emporia High School, and attended KSTC, Emporia. She began work as a cashier at the 50-S Drive-In Theatre west of Emporia, and the Teichgraeber Milling Company. She later worked as a receptionist for Dr. Ed Campbell, then spent a number of years working as the receptionist for Dr. Duane Ginavan, until their retirement.

She was a member of the Auxiliary of Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, and the former Fraternal Order of Eagles, where she and her husband Jerry had been active.

Funeral services will be held at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 1:30 PM. The service will be conducted by Pastor Earl Detwiler, Grace United Methodist Church, Emporia. Interment will be in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening, June 9, 2011 from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
