Kenneth L. Emley, 95, passed away Sunday, August 14. Kenneth was a life-long resident of Emporia until the last 3 years, when he resided at Park Meadows Senior Living Center in Overland Park.
He was born the son of Roscoe and Chyuma Higgins Emley in Hartford, Kansas, on September 9, 1920.
Survivors include his son Ken (Becky) Emley; a grandson, Cory (Erin) Emley; a granddaughter, Lyndsy (Cory) Poulsen; four great-grandchildren, Lola Emley, Asher Emley, Madelyn Poulsen, and Murphy Poulson; a brother, Leonard (Ann) Emley; and former daughter-in-law, Patti McGee.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Nellie; an infant son, Kevin; an infant brother, Dale; and a sister, Irene Reichardt.
Kenneth was a true example of the Greatest Generation. His early years were shaped by the Great Depression. In W.W. II, Kenneth served with Patton’s third army and then returned home to work at Panhandle Pipeline in Olpe for the next 37 years.
Kenneth was a talented woodworker and was always happiest doing something with his hands. He built the family’s first home, as well as many pieces of furniture such as cabinets, dollhouses and clocks for family members. Family was very important to Kenneth and he took pride and pleasure in being around his immediate family and many cousins. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and had been a member of Ball-McColm Post #5, of the American Legion.
During their marriage, Kenneth and Nellie were able to travel extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe, and never missed an event in which the grandkids were participating, often driving two hours to watch a short performance and then returning home the same day to Emporia. During the last five years of Nellie’s life, as her health deteriorated, Kenneth lovingly cared for her in their home. He will be remembered by family members as a hard worker who strived to build a better life for his wife and family.
Kenneth’s funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 19, 2016 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, with Pastor Lee Hoskins officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. The family will meet with friends from 10:00 A.M. until the service time at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions to either Grace United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association may be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
