Kenneth J. Schmidt, 87, of rural Olpe died on Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Holiday Resort Care Center, Emporia.
Kenny was born on January 8, 1930 in Olpe, Kansas the son of Leonard and Ida Sterbenz Schmidt. He married Imogene Scheve on May 24, 1952 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Maydale. She survives.
Surviving family members include: wife, Imogene of the home; sons, Scott Schmidt and wife Donna of Gardner, Steven Schmidt and wife Lydia of Lincoln, Nebraska, Stanley Schmidt and wife Cheryl of Overland Park; daughters, Jolene Arndt and husband Kenneth of Emporia, and Julie Schmidt of Emporia; brothers, Duane Schmidt and wife Jeanette and Daniel Schmidt and wife Wilma Jean both of Olpe; sisters, Leonarda Henderson of Emporia, Corrine Frizzel and husband Paul of Olpe, Lillian Spellman and husband Fred of Emporia, Ida Lynn Haag and husband Tom of Auburn; twelve grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Clarence Schmidt, and Larry Schmidt, sister Donita Simmons.
Kenny was a Farmer and Stockman for 64 years. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Olpe, Knights of Columbus Chapter #1589, Grand Knight, Past Grand Knight, Honorary Life member of the Knights of Columbus, Coffey County Rural Water Board for 30 years, St. Joseph School Board member, St. Joseph Parish Council, the Lyon County Election Board, and the Agriculture Soil Conservation (ASC) board.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Olpe with burial following at the Maydale Cemetery southeast of Olpe. The rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night at the church. Memorial contributions to the Knight of Columbus or Hand in Hand Hospice can be sent in care of the funeral home.
