Laddie D. Stierwalt

December 15, 1920 — March 1, 2013

Former Emporian, Laddie D. Stierwalt, passed away at his home in Derby, Kansas, Friday evening, March 1, 2013 at the age of 92.

Laddie was born December 15, 1920 in Thayer County, Nebraska, the son of Bruce A. and Kitty J. (Shoup) Stierwalt. He married Leona V. Brooks in Emporia on October 27, 1946. She passed away July 30, 2009.

Surviving family members include: his daughter, Ladene (Rodney) Fowler; son, Leon (Sharon) Stierwalt, Edmond, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Tonya Stallings, Evan Fowler, Hayley Mayes, and Joeley Fowler; and four great-grandchildren, Aspyn Stallings, Talon Stallings, Liam Mayes, and Skyler Mayes.

He is preceded in death by three brothers, Alvie, Pete, and Charles Stierwalt; and a sister, Rosey James.

Mr. Stierwalt attended grade school in Hubbell, Nebraska, and graduated from high school in Chester, Nebraska. After graduation, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) for two years in southern Nebraska. In May of 1941, he moved to Emporia and began working for the Santa Fe Railway.

In December of 1941, Laddie entered military service in the United States Army and served until the end of World War II. He was assigned to the Army Railroad Corps and attained the rank of Corporal. His duty assignments took him to Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia in North Africa, and Italy, France, Belgium, and Germany in Europe. At the close of the war, Laddie returned to Emporia to resume his work with the Santa Fe Railway, until retiring in December of 1980 as Communication Chief of the Eastern Division of Santa Fe. In the fall of 1990, Laddie and Leona moved to Edmond, Oklahoma. In the spring of 2006 they moved to Derby, Kansas, near their daughter’s home. He was a longtime member of Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. The service will be conducted by Mr. Lee Hoskins. Interment, with military honors by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, and Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.

The family will greet friends the half-hour before services.
