Larry D. Howard of Emporia, Kansas, died on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at his home. He was 78.

Larry was born on November 25, 1934 in Lincoln, Kansas, the son of Clinton and Lora Chard Howard. He married Patricia Gibson at the First United Methodist Church in Emporia. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include: son, Kirk Howard of Emporia; daughters, Lori Rainey of Emporia, Tammi Hanson of Burlington, and Jodi Howard of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren, Chris Mareska, Janae Hanson, Matt Howard, Kaylene Devena, Colby Rainey, Blake Hanson, Shawna Rainey, and Scott Bird; and great-grandson, Dylan Hanson.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, May Louise Judd.

Larry was the owner of Crawford Furniture Store in Emporia for 57 years before retiring 5 years ago. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Emporia, where he was one of the original founders of the 56 Followers. He was a Sunday school teacher, and was also on the Financial Board and Board of Trustees, all at the church.

He was a 50-year member of the Emporia Masonic Lodge #12 A.F. & A.M., and a member of the Arab Shrine Temple in Topeka, where he was also a liaison for the Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis. He was a member and past president of the Neosho Valley Shrine Club, a member and past director of the Arab Cartoon Unit in Emporia, and a member and current director of Royal Order of Jesters Court 125 in Topeka. He belonged to a photography club, was a Boy Scout leader, a member and past president of the Emporia Flatland Cruisers, and a member of the Rusty Zippers.

He was a Training Camp Recruit in 1952 for the Chicago Cubs, and also a driver’s education instructor at Emporia State University. He graduated from Emporia State University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in both industrial arts and physics.

Cremation has taken place, with a Memorial Service to be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 19, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Emporia. Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
