Larry Gene Schaefer, of Emporia, Kansas, was born on September 9, 1938 to Oscar and Mary (Pantle) Schaefer, in Emporia. Surrounded by his family, he passed away on Monday, January 19, 2015 at Life Care Center in Burlington, Kansas. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Jane Viar of Overland Park, Kansas.
Larry married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Louise Browning on March 10, 1957 at her home on Sylvan Street, and she survives. Also surviving are two sisters, Norma Mayes and husband, Richard, of Emporia, and Marlene Danner and husband, Bill of Burlington, Kansas; son, John Schaefer and wife, Carol; daughter, Connie Coble and husband, Dan, all of Emporia; three grandchildren, Lisa Smallwood, and husband, Drue, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Andrea Bazan, and husband Steven, of McKinney, Texas, and Chase Coble of Emporia; six great-grandchildren, Schaefer, Silas, Samuel, and Shepherd Smallwood, and Summer and Oliver Bazan.
Larry grew up on his parents’ farm southeast of Emporia, attended a rural elementary school, Coal Creek, and later graduated from Emporia High School. He worked at Southwestern Bell for 36 years before his retirement in 1994.
Larry loved his family first and foremost, and took great joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In his younger years, he played softball and later, enjoyed coaching his son’s Little League baseball teams. He loved the outdoors, and especially liked to hunt, fish, and golf. He delighted in taking his family to Roaring River State Park in Missouri for family vacations each summer.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Roberts-Blue-Funeral Home, Emporia. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Cremation has taken place, and inurnment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Olpe, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Hand in Hand Hospice or Emporia Alzheimer’s Support Group, and sent in care of the funeral home.
