LaVerne Mae “Verna” Bahre, 88 of Emporia, Kansas died December 30, 2018 at the Holiday Resort Care Center in Emporia.
On May 23, 1930 Verna was born on a farm near Dodge City, Kansas the daughter of Walter and Lydia (Schultz) Bahre. The family moved from western Kansas to McPherson, Kansas where she graduated from McPherson High School. During her high school years she worked at an ice cream shop. After high school she moved to Kansas City where she worked as an elevator operator for a downtown hotel. Verna loved to draw and was hired at Hallmark Cards doing drawing for their greeting cards. She then went to work at Southwestern Bell as a draftsman until her retirement. Verna was a big Kansas City Royals fan and loved going to their ballgames. She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Emporia, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Independence, Missouri, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Verna Loved to travel and when she retired she took many bus trips to various and fun places. Her favorite thing to do was to play and watch tennis. She played tennis for many years with 3 other ladies well into her 80 th year.
Verna is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Mildred Bura and brothers Marvin Bahre and Rogene Bahre.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, January 7, 2019 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Emporia. Pastor Norbert Tegtmeier will be officiating. Inurnment will be in the Mt. Washington Forever Cemetery in Independence, Missouri at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Messiah Lutheran Church or Emporia High School Tennis Team and sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
