Services for Leona L. Ohm, 98, longtime resident of Emporia, Kansas, will be at 10:30 A.M., Monday, June 8, 2015 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia.

Mrs. Ohm died Monday, June 1, 2015 at Stormont-Vail HealthCare in Topeka. Pastor Norbert Tegtmeier of Messiah Lutherans Church will conduct the service. Burial will be in Bazaar Cemetery, Bazaar, Kansas. The casket will remain closed.


Leona L. Schroeder, the daughter of John T. and Regina (Rathke) Schroeder, was born on April 18, 1917, in rural Olpe, Kansas. She was the last surviving sibling of ten children. Leona and her brothers and sisters attended a one-room schoolhouse in rural Olpe.


She married Frank E. Ohm in 1935. He died in 1983. Leona is survived by son, Ken (Ruth) Ohm of Topeka; and daughter, Bonita Kuhns of Huron, South Dakota. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and even a few great-great-grandchildren.


Leona’s greatest joy was working and volunteering at Newman Memorial Hospital in Emporia, where she served 20 years in the housekeeping department, and was the department director from 1972 through 1987. Following her retirement, she continued to serve with Newman Memorial Auxiliary at the information desk for nearly 25 years. Visitors and employees were greeted daily with her warm smile and candy.
