Leonard L. Gordon, 87, Americus, Kansas, passed away Wednesday morning, July 1, 2015.
Leonard LuRae Gordon was born March 16, 1928 in Americus, the son of Stanley R. and Pauline (Birckett) Gordon. Leonard and Virginia Law were united in marriage on May 13, 1953. Virginia died December 12, 2005.
Surviving family members include his son, Dr. Scott Gordon, and his wife, Rhonda, Emporia, Kansas; daughter, Rae Ann Smith, and her husband, David, Hays, Kansas; and six grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Shawna Smith, and her husband, Will Clarkson, Nathan Smith, Austin Gordon, Kelsey Gordon, and Megan Gordon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Robert Dale Gordon.
Leonard was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre and in Japan during the occupation, on the staff of General Douglas McArthur. He was a member of Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion. Leonard was employed as a conductor by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway for 38 years, retiring in 1990, and was a member of the United Transportation Union Local #391, Emporia. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Americus.
Funeral services will be at Americus United Methodist Church on Monday, July 6, 2015 at 2:00 P.M., with Pastor Gene Huston conducting the service. Interment will follow in Americus Cemetery, Americus. Military honors will be presented by Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion.
The family will receive friends at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Sunday evening, July 5, 2015 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
Memorial contributions to the church, Hand In Hand Hospice, or Emporia American Legion Baseball Club may be sent in care of the funeral home.
