LeRoy Edward Raymond “Cap” Thomas, a lifetime resident of Lyon County, Kansas, went to be with his Savior on September 7, 2015. He was 88 years old when he passed away at the family home.
A lifetime resident of Lyon County, Kansas, LeRoy was a fourth generation decedent of Joel and Sarah McKee Haworth, who homesteaded southwest of Emporia in 1854, before the formation of Lyon County. LeRoy was born April 12, 1927, the youngest child of David John Thomas and Ida Pearl Haworth Thomas. After graduating from Emporia High School, he served his country in the Army Air Corp. from 1946 to 1949.
On September 20, 1949, he married the love of his life, LoraDelle Viola “Dixie” Thomas in the Chase County Courthouse in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. She preceded him in death on August 5, 2015.
Those close to LeRoy knew there was nothing he could not do. During the course of his life LeRoy worked at Kansas State Teachers College, Black Top Construction, and pipe lined out of Pratt Kansas. In 1952 LeRoy went to work for the City of Emporia. In 1981 he retired as shift captain from the Emporia Fire Department and in 2010 he retired from the Emporia Police Department. He also worked part time for Catfish, Francis Electric, and Lyon County Area Transportation.
LeRoy was a member of the original Foursquare Gospel Church. He was active in the lives of his children and grandson. He served in leadership for Boy Scout Troop 157 of the First Christian Church for over 44 years, helped with Girl Scouts, and shared his love of photography with many.
LeRoy is survived by a son, Scott Thomas; a daughter, Vanda Thomas Stephens; and one grandson, Thomas Charles Stephens, all of Emporia, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He is also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Nina Mae Thomas Weidner, and Althea Pearl Thomas; and five brothers, William Martin Thomas, Harold James Thomas, Wayne David Thomas, Virgil Lee Thomas, and Clarence Eugene Thomas.
Family will meet visitors on Thursday, September 10, 2015 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 11, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at the First Christian Church, in Emporia, Kansas, officiated by Rev. Leonard Wagner of the Church of God of Prophecy. Graveside services will follow at Line Pleasant View Cemetery, southwest of Olpe, Kansas. Military Honors will be presented by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, and Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Church of God of Prophecy or Hand in Hand Hospice, and sent in care of the funeral home.
