Lloyd A. Stone, 77, passed away on February 13, 2013 at Presbyterian Manor in Emporia.
Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Emporia, on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. Interment will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia, with military graveside services conducted by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion and Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The family will receive friends at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home on Friday evening, February 15, 2013 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
Lloyd was born on March 23, 1935 in Stevens County, Kansas, the son of Walter R. and Inez P. (Mangels) Stone. He married his wife of 56 years, Twila J. Anderson on December 22, 1956 in Emporia. She survives.
Other survivors include three sons, James Stone, Frisco, Texas, John Stone and wife Holly, Overland Park, Kansas, and Benjamin Stone, Emporia; four grandchildren, Whitney, Morgan, Rylie and Jackson Stone; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and three sisters.
Lloyd served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Rotary Club, numerous counseling associations, and he proudly served for six years in the Kansas House of Representatives. He was also the President of the Board of Newman Regional Health, Emporia.
Dr. Stone received his BSE in Physical Education in 1958, his MS in Physical Education in 1959, and his EDS in Educational Administration in 1967, all from Kansas State Teachers College (now ESU). He also earned his PhD in Counseling from the University of Wyoming in 1971. As a student at KSTC, he was a member of the men’s tennis team and Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity.
After joining the faculty at Emporia State University as an Assistant Professor in 1965, he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1972 and full professor in 1977. In 1984 he was appointed as the Chairperson of the Counselor Education and Rehabilitation Department where he served until 1994. He retired in 1996, and was honored with the ESU Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999. He returned to ESU as a Professor Emeritus for the 2003/2004 school year. He was very involved with state and national counseling organizations, including being instrumental in the development of The National Board of Certified Counselors organization. He was the first Nationally Certified Counselor in the United States.
Memorials have been established with Hand in Hand Hospice, the Endowment Program of Emporia State University, and First United Methodist Church of Emporia. Contributions may be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
