Lois Irene McDaniel, 98, died Friday night, March 15 2013, at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. She was a lifelong resident of Lyon County, born in Admire, Kansas on August 6, 1914. She was the daughter of S. Frank and Josie Waters Whitmore, and the last living member of her family.
She was preceded in death by: brothers, Clyde Whitmore, Ray Whitmore, Willard Whitmore, and Maurice Whitmore; and by her sisters, Myrtle Glenn, Gladys Sanders, and Maude Thomson.
Lois graduated from Admire High School. On November 2, 1935 she married Bernard C. Arnold in Oskaloosa, Kansas. They had one child, Bernita Lonette Arnold Thompson, who preceded her in death. Bernard Arnold was drafted into the US Army Signal Corps in January 1945 and died in Okinawa on July 25, 1945. Lois married Theodore McDaniel on May 10, 1949 and lived in Emporia, where Ted was Editor of The Emporia Gazette. They were married 39 years until his death in 1989.
Lois was known for her lovely lawn and rose garden. For several years she owned The Purl Shop and taught many in town to knit. She was a Golden Girl in ES Chapter, PEO and a member of a garden club, study club, and bridge club.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Harry Thompson, Emporia; three grandchildren, Lisa Tosti, Emporia, David Thompson, Kansas City, Missouri, and Lindsay Thompson-Malone, Reading, Kansas; and three great-grandchildren, Tore and Antonio Tosti, Emporia, and Zach Sparks, Moses Lake, Washington.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 A.M., Monday morning, March 18, 2013 at the Patio Garden of Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.
