Loren D. Martin

Loren Douglas Martin, 81, retired realtor, died March 29, 2015, at his home in Emporia, Kansas.

He was born on a farm near Pomona, Kansas, May 16, 1933, the son of Anna Louise (Oest) and Ralph Roosevelt Martin. Loren went to a country school until the family moved to Overbrook, Kansas, when he was twelve.

Loren was a gifted athlete from an early age, attaining the honor of Kansas high school all-state honorable mention in football and basketball, and honorable mention all American in football. He was recruited by the University of Kansas in football, and went on to play baseball and letter in both sports. Loren has been a true blue Jayhawk ever since.

Through his association with KU baseball, he went to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, for two summers, where he played for the Moose Jaw Mallards, a semipro team. His excellence in baseball led him to play for several semipro teams in the National Baseball Congress tournament.

Loren graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's degree, and from Emporia State University with a master's degree. He coached at Halstead (KS) High School, Emporia High School, and the College of Emporia. In Emporia, Loren was in the insurance business, oil business, and ultimately worked for his old friend, Don Ek, at Ek Real Estate for some 30 years, a job he loved.

Loren was a member of the First United Methodist Church, University of Kansas K-Club (as a double letterman), Lions Club, the Emporia Board of Realtors, and also the National Board of Realtors.

He was an avid golfer who loved to travel, especially to Lawrence, Kansas for various athletic events, and to be with his family and friends. He met Nannette Pitman at the University of Kansas, and they married in Haven, Kansas on August 14, 1955. They were devoted to each other, and were looking forward to their 60th anniversary in August of 2015. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include: daughter, Kim (Mark) Clapp of Lee's Summit, Missouri; son, Steve (Nina) Martin, Canton, Kansas; grandson, Jordan (Kelcey) Clapp, Lee’s Summit; granddaughter, Mariel Clapp, Lee’s Summit; great-granddaughter, Emilia Clapp, Lee's Summit; a sister, Naida Butterfield, Greeley, Colorado, and many nieces and nephews.

Loren was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald Martin.

Loren Martin loved his family above all else; a great husband, an amazing dad, and a wonderful "Papa" to his grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 P.M., Monday, April 6, 2015, at the First United Methodist Church, Emporia. Inurnment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia, at a later date. Cremation is planned.
