Lucille Mae Shelmadine was born May 1, 1918 in Seattle, Washington, the daughter of Glenn and Esther (Wieseman) Shelmadine. Just after Lucille’s birth, the young Shelmadine family returned to their home town of Silver Creek, Nebraska, so father, Glenn, could serve out his enlistment in the army.
While growing up in Silver Creek, Lucille learned to play the cello and piano, and was very active in her school activities. Lucille resided with her folks in Silver Creek until her marriage to Leslie R. Marks at Kearney, Nebraska on August 6, 1939. He passed away October 22, 2002. Lucille, Leslie, and their five children moved from Nebraska to Emporia in 1956. While Leslie taught on the Emporia State campus, Lucille taught piano lessons for many kids of Emporia in her home at 919 Union Street. Lucille was very supportive of what her children were involved with, and would attend Roosevelt High School sports activities from 1956 until her twin boys graduated in 1969. Lucille was a member of the First Congregational Church, Emporia.
