Lucya Bernadene Davis of Emporia, Kansas, passed away at her home on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at the age of 80. Her passing marks the end of a life dedicated to education, family, and community service.
Born on February 22, 1946, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Emporia, Lucya was the cherished daughter of Alva Leslie and Adeline Maria Kahle Davis. She grew up in Emporia, where she nurtured her deep appreciation for nature and community, qualities that remained with her throughout her life.
Lucya was an alumna of Emporia High School and continued her education at Emporia State Teachers College, where she earned her teaching certificate. With a commitment to shaping young minds, she dedicated a significant portion of her career to teaching at Valley Heights School in Blue Ridge, Kansas, from 1971 to 1981. Her passion for education was evident in the care and attention she gave to her students.
Later, Lucya returned to Emporia to care for her aging parents and to support her brother. Beyond her family responsibilities, she lent her time to assist Sarah Howe of the Howe Homestead, cultivating a deep attachment to the historic property. Her involvement with the Lyon County Historical Society reflected her dedication not only to preserving history but also to strengthening her community’s cultural roots.
Lucya was known for her meticulous love of nature. Whether pruning shrubs or tending to the lawn, she took great pride in maintaining a beautiful and orderly environment around her. She harbored a particular affection for animals, especially the cats that were part of her life over the years. Above all, Lucya’s heart was characterized by her endless capacity for caring for others.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Alva Leslie and Adeline Maria Kahle Davis, and her brother Jerry Davis.
Cremation has been planned, with a graveside service to be held later at Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Lucya’s memory will remain a cherished part of the Emporia community, remembered for her gentle spirit, dedication to education, and her unwavering love for family, nature, and history.
