Margaret “Ilene” Burris, 88, passed away surrounded by family at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, KS, on September 5, 2015.
Margaret was born November 30, 1926, in Maydale, Kansas to Fred and Anna (Riddle) Haughton. She graduated from Emporia High School in 1944. On January 27, 1944, she married Paul Burris, the love of her life, and they were married for nearly 69 years. Paul preceded her in death on September 2, 2012.
After graduating from cosmetology school in 1949, she worked in that profession until 1975. She also worked five years in the Register of Deeds office before running for that office in 1980 and successfully completing three terms.
Since retirement, she has served as a volunteer at Newman Regional Health, Election Board, and Red Cross. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary - serving several terms as president and other offices, currently chaplain.
She is a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Emporia, where she is a member of the Altar Society and continued to actively support the school long after her seven children had graduated. Ilene was an avid Bingo player, and especially loved taking the grandchildren and great-grandchildren when they came to visit.
Survivors include: daughters, Elaine (Walt) Henrie, Susan (Larry) Haag, and Janna (Ken) Elfrink; sons, Michael (Tami), Toby (Kim), Scott (Chrissy), Rick (Kate); grandchildren, Dena (Brian) Wilkins, Brandy Bitler (Billy Noel), Jon (Kris) and Jeff (Missy) Facklam, Aaron (Katie) and Adam Burris, Dreonna (Jeremy) Breton, Danae (Michael) Fanjoy, Shilah (Chris) Stahl, Jeremiah Smith, McKenna Elfrink, Ethan Hogg, Logan and Lexie Burris, Micah and Jonah Burris; great-grandchildren, Mason (Katie) Liggett, Austin and Quinton Wilkins, Bryson Bitler, Heidi, Ellie and Karli Facklam, Emily and Colby Facklam, Posey D. Burris, Westen and Jett Breton, Cyrus and Xander Fanjoy, Landis Stahl; brother, Chuck (Marilyn) Haughton; sister-in-law, Carol Haughton; brothers-in-law, Marion Burris, and Eddie (Margaret) Burris.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Helen (Loren) Fichtner; brothers, Fred (Betty) Haughton, Jim (Sandy) Haughton, Bill Haughton; brothers-in-law/sisters-in-law, Clarence (Elizabeth) Burris, Hugh (Norma) Burris, Helen Burris; and a grandson, Shawn Henrie.
The family will receive friends at Sacred Heart Church, Emporia, Tuesday evening, September 8, 2015, from 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 9, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. Father Brandon Farrar, Pastor, will conduct the Mass. Cremation has taken place and a private Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Emporia.
Memorials have been established with American Legion Post #5 Auxiliary, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and Hand in Hand Hospice. Contributions may be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
